Minnesota Contractor charged with Wage Theft

In a press conference yesterday, Ramsey County Attorney John Choi announced eight felony charges against a MN contractor, including wage theft, tax evasion, and insurance fraud.

The complaint alleges stolen wages in excess of $250k through “under-the table” cash payments, as well as insurance fraud totaling $135,000 in unpaid workers compensation premiums, unemployment insurance fraud, and felony tax evasion for underreported income.

The investigation compiled data from various agencies, including the St. Paul Police department and four state agencies (Commerce, Revenue, DLI, & DEED) recently empowered to share data and cooperate in misclassification and wage theft investigations.

Choi made a point to declare this investigation representative of a statewide effort to transform labor practices in the construction industry, emphasizing: “This will not be the last case. We have many, many more that are in the pipeline.”
